Their Story
Keith was born in Capel on the family farm on the 19 June 1921. His parents were Frederick and Fanny Turner (nee Shortland). In October 1921 the family moved to the house (now Colroy Tearooms) opposite the Capel Hotel. He attended Capel school, graduating in 1937. He then went to Narrogin Agricultural School, returning home in 1940.
He then enlisted in the Australian Army as a Gunner. In 1943 he married Beatrice May Chapman (Betty) who worked at the Roberts Store. In 1945 he was discharged form the army and moved back to Capel, moving into a house on Bussell Highway. He also became a father when his first son, Errol Edwin was born on the 2 July 1945, followed by Cedric Neil on the 19 December 1949 and Dean John on 6 October 1959.
In 1945 he worked with his father, Frederick Henry Turner, at the Abattoir, until his father passed away in October 1947.
In 1969 he gained his first daughter in law when Errol married Dixie Williams on 13 September. In early December 1975 he became a Grandfather with the birth of Tracey Nicole who was followed by Brendon Wade in March 1978. Dean’s marriage to Karen Cole also produced three more Granddaughters – Bree, Aimee and Jade.
In 1977 he commenced work at Ross Payne’s Butchering Shop. He also played Hockey with Stratham with his older brother, Clarrie. He also participated in football for Capel. Dean played football for East Perth in the WAFL where Keith was called Coke Bottle due to his thick glasses. Cedric was also a trainer for East Perth. In 1987 Dean played in the inaugural squad for the West Coast Eagles as they joined the AFL. He had previously left East Perth to play for Fitzroy in the VFL. Keith enjoyed watching the games from the grandstands.
In 1980 he retired onto an Invalid Pension due to his poor eyesight. In 1988 he surrendered his driver’s licence due to his vision issues.
In June 1993 Keith and Beatrice celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary. On 29 September 1993 he passed away in Bunbury St John of God Hospital after a battle with cancer. He was buried in the Capel Cemetery.
Keith lived for his family.
His story was supplied by his eldest son Errol.
