HISTORY OF FREDERICK ROLAND TUCKER OF CAPEL

He was born in New South Wales in 1888 and came to W.A in 1900 to his Brother In Law D.B. Reid at Midland Junction and went to school there for a short time.

After leaving school, he worked in Fremantle for a while: his Brother In Law who was a Boiler Maker decided to go farming and purchased land in the Elgin District.  So Fred decided to come too, and he went to work for H.H Roberts, and while working there he became very friendly with Miss Ethel Rosina Payne, who was living with her Mother and family who were living with Frederick House.

Fred used to pay her a visit every Sunday and could be seen riding his little grey pony; they eventually became engaged and were married on April 22nd., 1909.

Fred purchased a property in the Stirling Estate in 1908 and went in for Dairying and Potato growing; this he did for 15 years.

Owing to the property being very small and his family increasing and he could not further increase his income, so he decided to sell his property and buy a larger one, which he did.

He sold his property to Geo. Dunkley who was already a settler on the Stirling Estate in 1923.

He purchased land on the Capel River consisting of several locations, the first location on the north side of the Capel River was taken up by John Hutton in the early 1890’s, the land on the south side was taken up by Geo. E. Dilley.

Very little improvements had been done on these properties and they were purchased by Paul Ohl who planted an Orchard and carted his fruit by horse and dray to the Capel Railway Station for many years.

He sold his property to Alf Wheatley who had it only for a short time when he sold it to F.R. Tucker in 1923.  Fred continued with the orchard and mixed farming for a number of years.

He leased his property to his two sons R.W. & C.R. Tucker: they eventually bought the property in 1950.  Fred continued to live in the homestead.

Petterson & Co. erected a Packing Shed on a small portion of land purchased from Tucker and adjoining the Goodwood Road.

Fred was appointed Manager of the Packing Shed, a position he held for 22 years.  He was also Patterson & Co’s agent for the Capel District.

R.W & C.R Tucker divided the property and continued farming until 1963 when R.W. Tucker sold his property to his son Neville, who is continuing farming and R.W. Tucker is employed by the Department of Agriculture and lives in Bunbury.

C.R Tucker is still farming and has bought another property owned by R. Fisher.

Fred Tucker was a member of the Capel Road Board for serveral years; he represented the Town Ward: he was also a member of the Fruit Growers Association, Capel Agricultural Hall Committee, Church Committee, Red Cross.  He took a very keen interest in all kind of sport and was a keen tennis player.

His wife was a member of the Soldiers Comfort Fund during the first World War, also a member of the Red Cross, also a member of St. Johns Church of England Committee and helped in many ways to raise funds for any worthy cause.

In 1960 Fred and his wife decided to shift into Capel where they had a nice home built and to enjoy life: unfortunately Mrs. Tucker died in November 1960 and Fred died in August, 1962.

They had a family of 7 sons and 2 daughters.

R.W.  Tucker married Minna Bentley – they had 1 son.

F.T. Tucker married Clare Doyle – 2 sons and 2 daughters.

He has an up to date dairy form at Tutunup which he works in conjuction with his two sons who are married.  He has been a member of the Busselton Shire Council for serveral years.

R.J. Tucker married Jean Smith of Bridgetown – no family.

He is a Manager in the Bank of N.S.W Perth.

A.D. Tucker married Mary Forrest of Ludlow.  They have 4 sons, 1 daughter.  He is a farmer on the Capel River – Orchardist and Cattle breeder.

C.R. Tucker married Mollie Lovell – they have 2 sons single and 2 married daughters.  C.R. Tucker is a returned soldier.

Ken D. Tucker married Eily Demoulin – 1 son & 1 daughter.  Ken is a Manager in the Bank of N.S was 3 years in Suva, also Eastern States, now in Perth he is a returned soldier.

E.D. Tucker married Verna Capewell – they have 3 daughters and 1 son.

He bought a first class farm at Tutunup and went for dairy farming and raising stock.  He farmed for several years and then sold his farm to Tim Carter and retired to live in Busselton.  He is a returned soldier.

Lilian Tucker married C. Turner.  They have 2 sons and 2 daughters and have a farm near Vasse about 6 miles south of Busselton where they dairy farm and mixed farming.

Doris Tucker married John MacCormack – they have 2 sons.  He works in a spare shop and also repairs Radios and T.V.
