Their Story

Violet’s family immigrated from England, where they originally settled in Maylands.

She was the third child, and first daughter born to the family.

The family moved down south in Western Australia and settled on a family farm at Elgin, Western Australia.

The local Telephone exchange was run from their house, with Violet being the telephonist.

She met a dashing young local farmer, Erle Scott, married in 1930 and settled on the farm ‘Maryville’ in Elgin to milk cows.

Violet raised three children on the farm.

Along with Erle they became founding members of the Elgin Community Hall, with the wife of each committee member being automatically elected as an auxiliary member to run the social functions. They dedicated 60 years’ service to the prosperity of the hall. The regard they had for the Elgin hall shows in their book dedication in ‘OUR ELGIN HALL’.

GOD MADE US TO LOVE AND CHERISH

TO GIVE TO OUR HALL BEFORE WE PERISH

PERFORMED TO PERFECTION

Violet’s passions were playing bowls, cards and having an amazing garden.

Together with Erle they were members of the original bowls club on Capel Drive before moving to the now current facility at the Capel Country Club, Goodwood Road, Capel in 1976.  They were both Life members of the club.

After Erle passed away in 1992, Violet remained on the farm for another 4 years and then moved into a house in Capel, where she stayed for another 4 years.

Due to ill health in 2000, she moved into Wattle Hill Nursing Home, Bunbury, where she passed in February 2001.
