Their Story

Percival (Percy) James Scott was the 5th son born to William Proctor Scott and Lavinia Susannah Scott nee Higgins of ‘Roselands’ Stratham. Percy had 7 brothers and 1 sister.

Percy was a farmer most likely working for his father Proctor up until he enlisted for WW1 on the 8 October 1915. Aged 26 years old. His older brother Douglas Proctor Scott enlisted 18 days after Percy had already enlisted.

Both Percy and Douglas enlisted at ‘Blackboy Hill’ Perth, Western Australia and embarked together from Fremantle 12 February 1916 on HMAT ‘Miltiades’.

Percy disembarked at the Port of Suez 10 March 1916 and then embarked 29 March 1916 on HMAT ‘Transylvania’ leaving from Alexandria, Egypt.

He disembarked at Marseilles, France on 4 April 1916.

On 23 April 1916 Percy was admitted to the Base Depot Hospital, Etaples, France suffering from influenza.

By 25 April 1916 Percy was listed as seriously ill and then dangerously ill suffering from Pneumonia.

Percy hung on a few more days until he lost his battle with Pneumonia on 5 May 1916, aged 26 years old. He never saw active service.

During the time of Percy’s illness, his father Proctor was receiving updates of Percy’s worsening illness and condition. What a tragic and sad time for his father and siblings learning of Percy’s death. Coming so soon after the sudden death of wife and mother.

On the same day as his death, 5 May 1916, Percy was buried at the Etaples Military Cemetery, France in plot 5, Row C, Grave 3A.

For his commitment to serve in WW1 Percy was posthumously awarded the Victory Medal, British War Medal and 1914/15 Star Medal. And later his father received a memorial scroll and plaque in his honour.

Some years later, Percy’s father received advice and two photographs of the location of his grave in Etaples Military Cemetery, France. The contents of his kit bag were also received by his father.

Prior to James and Douglas’s departure for war service, their mother Lavinia Sussanah Scott died suddenly on 7 February 1916 at the family home ‘Roselands’ Stratham. One can only imagine how this was to affect their father and siblings with the sudden death of their wife and mother. Plus, what can only be considered as a sad time saying goodbye to Douglas and Percy for war service. The war was in its infancy at that time and the worry they would have endured would have been very difficult to bear. Also, for Percy and Douglas to learn of their mother’s death being only days before departure for war service.

Percy is memorialised on the family tomb stone at Capel Cemetery, Capel, Western Australia.
