Their Story

LIONEL ERLE SCOTT was the first born of three children to Erle & Violet Scott and he was brought up on the family farm ‘Maryville’ in Elgin, Western Australia.

He attended primary school in Stratham, then rode a horse to Capel to catch the school bus to Bunbury Senior High School for 2 years.

Lionel then went away to attend Denmark Agricultural School, Denmark, where he held the position of School Captain in his second year.

Farm life called and he then embarked on that life with his father, milking cows, sending the cream to market until he was 20 years of age.

In March 1953 he married a local girl, Joan Agnes Cain. The married couple were gifted 265 acres of land from Joan’s parent Aug and Freda Cain, which was adjoining the Cain Family Farm ‘Rangeview.

Being engaged for nearly 12 months enabled their family home and dairy to be constructed in time for occupation and milking commencement upon their wedding day in March 1953.

Four children were born and raised on the farm over the next 8 years.

The original walk-through dairy which produced cream was upgraded to a Herringbone Dairy and finally to a Rotary Dairy producing Full Cream Milk under the quota system.

Lionels passion was his workshop in which he could make mostly anything, applying his skills as a machinist, welder and engineer but would always say ‘it is only a BUSH JOB’. When money was short he also worked at the Capel Butter Factory.

His other passion was his golf and the Capel Golf Club, where he spent many hours and days playing golf. He was instrumental in assisting to set up the Golf Club at Stratham in 1964 and for it to be the fantastic venue it is today.

He was the club President 1977 – 1979 and became a Life Member 28 November 1978.

Family was everything to him and he cherished having Steven’s children living on the farm close by.

Unfortunately, Lionel’s life was cut short when he was diagnosed with Lung Cancer in March 2003 and passed July 2003.
