Occupation: Home duties. Farmer

Lavinia Susannah Scott was the second child and eldest daughter of thirteen children born to Henry William Higgins and Lavinia Gardiner of ‘Springfield Farm’, Capel, Western Australia. Henry and Lavinia were early settlers to the area and established a very successful farm that was described as the ‘best farm in the district’.

Lavinia married William Proctor Scott in 1881 at Picton, Western Australia. Proctor was the son of early pioneers of the district, Robert and Jane Scott nee Roberts of ‘Roselands’ Stratham. ‘Roselands’ had been established by his father John, and Proctor took over the running of this farm.

Lavinia would have worked alongside her husband as well as raising 9 children in what could be considered, arduous conditions. Nine children came along at very regular intervals. She would have endured much and especially with her two sons Douglas and Percy enlisting for WW1. What a worrying time this would have been for her as a mother as her two sons departed for war service on 12 February 1916.

Sadly, Lavinia died suddenly of a cerebral embolism on 7 February 1916 aged 59 years. She died at her home ‘Roselands’ Stratham. Five days before Douglas and Percy departed for war service. The grief for Douglas and Percy would have been immense to learn of their mother’s death only days before embarking from Fremantle on 12 February 1916. She did not witness what was to come shortly after, when news came of the deaths of her two sons Douglas and Percy who both died on active service in France. A terribly sad and tragic time for Proctor and all his remaining children.
