Their Story

James was always known as Jim.

Jim attended a very small school in Elgin, walking 2 miles each day, each way from his home at Irwin Farm. Jim loved school and was an avid reader.

Jim met his wife to be Edna Hutton (Jean) and would ride his horse to Capel to visit her. They married in 1938 and farmed at ‘Kyeema’ in Elgin. A dairy farm with a herd of 50 milking cows, selling the cream to the Boyanup Butter Factory, with any leftover milk feeding calves and Landrace pigs of which he was very proud and won awards with.

Jim loved his fishing at Sugar Loaf and anywhere he could get a line in, also owning a tinny where he would fish out from Peppermint Grove.

His other love was golf and quite often seeing another family member had borrowed the only car, he would be seen driving his tractor out to the Capel golf course. Jim also drove his tractor to the golf course to be one of the many people who created the amazing course as it is today.

Another great love was rifle shooting, Jim competed in Perth as well as Capel earning many trophies.

Jim was also very proud of his family and was a great family man and mentor.

Jim passed away in November 1968 and is buried in the Capel Cemetery with his beloved wife Jean.
