Their Story

Eugene was the first born son to William and Lavinia.

The family lived on the family farm ‘Roselands’ in Stratham, Western Australia and was educated at the Stratham Primary School.

Land was purchased and the couple settled on ‘Irwin Farm’ in Elgin when married in September 1908, where they lived all their married life.

Trove Newspaper Notice – Wedding Scott-Forrest

They cleared the land from virgin bush and made an outstanding success of farming.  ‘Irwin Farm’ was later regarded as a model of efficiency throughout the district.

He had a remarkable knowledge of mechanics and other work generally connected with the farm and he gave ready help to his neighbours who constantly sought his advice.

Eugene would act as Master of Ceremonies at most country dances, was chairman of the Elgin Hall Committee, chairman of the Elgin P&C Association and later Vice-President of the Elgin and Stratham P & C.

He was a member of the Capel Roads Board for twenty years until his accidental death in 1937.

His death was caused by a piece of wood flying up and entering his head near the eye from a fruit case he was cutting.  He was rushed to Bunbury and then to Perth, where an unsuccessful operation was performed.

At the time of his death, he was only 54 and Grace 47, with 8 children aged between eleven and twenty seven.
