Their Story
Erle was the first born to Eugene & Grace Scott and lived with his parents and siblings on the ‘Irwin’ family farm in Elgin and assisted in working the farm until he married and moved to his own farm.
The 3 brothers Erle, Jim and Percy were given some land on the cnr of Gavins & Elgin Road, Elgin, where they all built their own homes and farmed.
Erle operated a dairy for many years until his son Lionel left to run his own farm and dairy.
Early in 1933 it was decided to provide a hall for the Elgin community. The town formed a committee with Eugene Scott as president, Wesgarth Jilley secretary and Fred Vickery who donated a piece of land from the corner of his farm. They located a mill hall at Claymore and purchased the building for a suggested amount of $300. Erle and Joe Scott carted the hall by horse and cart to its now final resting place. Erle took over as president from his father Eugene upon his death in 1937, to which he held the position for 27 years until 1964. He became a local Justice of the Peace and spent 40 years as a Shire of Capel Councillor, with 40 years as Shire President.
Erle became the local windmill guru, which became his main source of income upon giving up his dairy. Rifle shooting, duck shooting and bowls became his passions, along with his plentiful summer garden.
Together with Vi he was a founding member of the original Capel Bowling Club on Capel Drive before moving to the current Capel Country Club, Goodwood Road, Capel facility in 1976. They were both life members of the club.
Erle passed away in Bunbury after a short illness in 1992.
