Their Story

George and Rose Hazelton were married in Chichester, Sussex, England on December 1, 1899.  George was a soldier in the British Army. Their first child, Violet was born in India, Cecil was born in England, Irene in South Africa, and Archibald in China. The family appear to have moved around regularly and in 1911 they are listed on the census living in Dublin Barracks, Ireland. Violet and Cecil are attending school and Irene, 3 and Archie, 2 are at home with their mother. This Irish Census records the birthplace of the children.

When War broke out in 1914, George was called on to serve. Irene was just 6. Life would have been filled with many uncertainties and hardships. On August 10, 1915, George was killed in the fighting at Flanders, Belgium. Irene was about to celebrate her 8 th birthday.

When Irene was 10 her mother married again, to Albert Green and in 1920 their daughter Lucy Dorothy Green was born. Irene’s brother Cecil left England on the ship “Esperance Bay” and arrived in Fremantle September 1, 1922. At the age of 16 Irene is listed as a passenger on the ship “Moreton Bay” that departed England on May 8, 1923, arriving in Fremantle four weeks later, June 8. Her occupation is listed as domestic servant. Her mother Rose 38years, Albert 31years, Lucy 2years and Archie 14years also came to Australia around the same time. They travelled on the ship “Benalla” via Capetown, arriving in Fremantle July 30, 1923. All the males of the family are listed as farmworkers. Albert and Rose applied to the Group Settlement Scheme and settled at Ruabon Group 32.

Irene may have worked as a domestic servant for a family in Bunbury. This is probably where she met her future husband, Les. In the electoral list from 1925 Les’s occupation is a traveller and he is living in White Road, Bunbury with his brother, Preston.

Trove Article – Engagement Announced.

Les and Rene were married on December 18, 1929. They have a home at 3 Teede Street, Bunbury in 1931 and Les is now a commissioned agent. In May of that year Irene and Les welcome their first child, a daughter, Janette. Their son, Stanley is born the following year. Janette and Stan attend primary school across the railway line in central Bunbury, not far from their home and then later went to the “big school” (Paisley Centre) when they were older. When Janette was 11 and Stan 10 the family welcomed another son, John. Janette recalled, during the war, she and Stan were billeted with Mr and Mrs Watts in Forrest Road, Capel. They attended the Capel school. Mr Watts was the headmaster.

On both the 1943 and 1949 electoral rolls, Irene and Les are living in Collie.

Trove Article – Appointment as Health Inspector

Les and Irene had moved to Mt Barker by the early 50’s. Les was now Health Inspector. Both Janette and Stan played hockey for Katanning. Janette had trained to be a nurse and had met a lovely young man, Reg McGeachin. Reg was a railway clerk, later working his way up the ranks to Station Master.

Trove Article – Guests for Wedding

Janette and Reg were married at St. Pauls Church in Bunbury in July 1953.

Trove Article – Marriage of Daughter Janette

It appears that shortly after this Irene and Les went their separate ways and divorced in about 1955. Les remarried in 1957.

Irene remarried in 1956, in Perth, to Walter James Ridley. Wally was a Batchelor whose family lived at Wickepin. Wally was working as a farm hand at Trayning. Sadly, Irene’s mother Rose died in February 1956. Irene’s son Stanley married in 1959, in Perth, to Kathleen Clancy. He had made his life in Perth working as a Storeman and then later as a Salesman.

The electoral roll shows Irene and Wally living in Trayning during the latter part of the 1950’s and the 60’s. Wally was still working as a farm hand. They moved to Perth in the 1970’s. Janette described Wally as a wonderful companion for her Mum.

Irene and Wally lived in Balcatta, Perth and it is here that Irene passed away from cancer. She was cremated and her ashes placed in the grave of her mother at Capel Cemetery by her family.
