Their Story
Charles Leslie Reynolds, was born in Newtown, New South Wales on 17.04.1891 to his parents Charles Thomas and Mary Annie Reynolds, (Mary was formerly Chinn, of Kiama, New South Wales.) Charles Thomas and Mary Annie Reynolds are both buried in the Fremantle, Cemetery Western Australia.
Charles Leslie Reynolds came to Western Australia when he was15 years old.
At age 24 years, Charles married in 1905 to Annie Georgina Andrews, born in Warwick, (2.8.1882) Queensland aged 23 years.
They were married in the residence of Charles Thomas Reynolds, Florence St, South Fremantle by Pastor Lewis Finster. The witnesses at this wedding were John Edgar Reynolds and Minnie Louise Andrews (sister to Annie).
Children born to Charles and Annie were: Eva Amelia 1906, Leslie John 1908, Hilda Edna 1910, Charles Lawrence 1913, and Arnold 1926.
Charles Leslie’s (known as Papa by his grand-children) employment was as follows:
A “Fireman with the Chief Mechanical Branch of WA Government Railways – July 15th 1901. “A Driver” July 18th 1902.
Later “A Locomotive and Traction Engine Driver “dated 11th July 1908. These dates are taken from his certificates that indicate this information.
He retired from driving trains and became a farmer.
The farm, (254 Jamieson Road Capel) was granted in 1913 to Charles Leslie and Annie Georgina Reynolds. The “Water Board” I understand granted the land to them.
One of the earliest documents to be in the family possession is a “Certificate of Registration”, that is a certificate for the branding for horses and cattle. Its number is 11732 and was issued to Charles Leslie Reynolds on 29th July 1914. Probably the biggest surprise to the family has been to find out that that the farm (at least then) was called “Glendale” not Glen Eden as previously thought. All my siblings have only ever known the farm as Glen Eden. When or who named it Glen Eden is complete conjecture on our part.
The property was a virgin bush block. It took years for the property to be cleared. One boundary of the farm is the Capel River and the front boundary is Jamieson Road. The neighbours on one side were Thomas and Phil Jamieson and on the other side Jack and Nel Hornibrook.
The clearing of the land was back breaking tedious work. It was referred to as grub clearing. There was no fancy machinery in those days to help. The farm was still being cleared when two Italian prisoners of war were allocated to the Reynolds family during World War 11.
One story is worth repeating here and my other siblings have heard this as well. Grandma told me (Annie Georgina his wife), that Papa worked for 6 months to get down one particularly large tree. It was down near the river. He dug around the tree and exposed the root system. The hole around the tree was so large and deep, well over his head, she was always afraid something may happen, and he may come to grief while working in the hole. These days with diggers and strong tractors it may have been easier, though probably just as unsafe.
Charles Leslie Reynolds contracted Tuberculosis and passed away on January 15th 1945. In those days there was no treatment available for Tuberculosis. Charles Leslie Reynolds is buried in the Capel Cemetery.
