Their Story

Annie Georgina Reynolds was born Annie Georgina Andrews to Arthur and his wife, Janet (nee Steele).

Annie’s birthday is August 2nd 1882. Annie’s father Arthur Andrews, passed away on September 26th 1910 in Maylands after a long and painful illness. Janet passed away 3rd  September 1936, aged 71 years and is buried with her husband.

The family home was in Warwick in Queensland. Annie was one of nine children, seven came to live in Western Australia: Jane, William, Annie, Arthur, Fred, Minnie and Gordon Andrews. There were two children Ivy and Charles who died in early childhood and their son William, died aged 30 years in Perth, shortly before his father and is buried in the same grave with his parents

Annie came to Western Australia when she was 15 years old. She married Charles Leslie Reynolds when aged 23 years. Their marriage took place in the residence of Chas. T. Reynolds, Florence St, South Fremantle on the 6th December 1905. The witnesses to this wedding were John Edgar Reynolds and Minnie Louise Andrews, Annie’s sister. Charles Leslie was known to the family as Pupa, or Papa.

Annie gave birth to five children, Eva Amelia in 1906, Leslie John 1908, Hilda Edna 1910, Charles Lawrence 1913, and Arnold Irwin 1926.

Much grief was experienced with death in Annie & Charles home: Arnold their youngest child suffered heart disease and only lived until the age of seven. He passed away in 1934.

Hilda Edna Earnshaw their daughter, died as a result of child birth in 1940. Hilda left 5 boys motherless, their Father was Wally Earnshaw. The boys were Albert, Bill, Murray, Ted & Alf.

March 12th 1956 their son Leslie John died as a result of a trucking accident in Kalgoorlie. Les’s death left a widow Gerty, and two sons Irwin and Norman Reynolds:

Charles Lawrence (always known as Lon or Lawrence) their son was deceased, on 24th February 1980 as the result of a tractor accident on the banks of the Capel River on Reynolds Road, but then known as Roe Road East.

Lawrence’s death in 1980 left a widow, Ivy, and five children; Lynton, Thelma, Lawreen, Glennard (Sno) and Elaine.

Annie and Charles’ eldest daughter, Eva Amelia Lang was their only child to live to old age.

Annie was a really resourceful person, times were tight and she managed to always to have a home built on love and respect. She lived a frugal life, but her frugality allowed her to be a generous person at the same time. As a child I remember her picking up fruit that had fallen to the ground and turning it into jam, that was forwarded to Karalundi, near Meekatharra, to the indigenous mission established in the 1950’s.

She personally sewed and mended clothes for the same institution.

She and her husband Charles Leslie Reynolds, built a beautiful farm, known as Glen Eden at 254 Jamieson Road, Capel, Western Australia. It took many years to establish the farm. At the time of writing (2024) Annies’ great granddaughter (Yolande Everett-Wall) is the owner of Glen Eden.

Annie and Charles embraced Christianity (Seventh-day Adventist) in the early years of their marriage and to their credit lived a devout life of service to others, and family.

Annie was always known as Grandma, to my siblings and cousins. She was a real character. She loved music, played a pedal organ, nice clothes, pretty crockery, a great cook, and had a large input into the lives of we grandchildren, as Ivy was frequently busy helping Lawrence on the farm.

I have been told by others she had a great sense of humour. That was mostly hidden from my view. Though she did love a joke with people.

During the latter years of World War 11, Annie’s husband, Charles, contracted tuberculosis (TB).

There was no known cure, antibiotics were not yet discovered. As TB is contagious, a painful decision was made: Charles was isolated into Lawrence and Ivy’s home to be cared for until he painfully passed away in January 1945.

Three generations lived forever after in the original homestead. The home for many years had no verandah, paths, paint, or fences. And of-course the outside toilet was down near the big tree.

Times were tight, but never-the-less the family home was open house to relatives and friends –always.

Annie Georgina Reynolds passed away on July 25 th 1968 as the result of a terminal stroke She lived 86 years. She is buried in the Capel Cemetery. A pioneer of the Capel district.
