Capel News – LINK WITH EARLY ELGIN

Great sorrow has been felt throughout the Elgin, Stratham and Capel districts at the death in St. John of God Hospital, Bunbury, on August 2 of Mrs. Lilly Reid, wife of well-known farmer, David Blair Reid. of Elgin

The late Mrs. Reid (nee Tucker) was born at Sydney in 1879 and came to Western Australia at the age of 19 years to marry David Reid, who had arrived from Sydney some years earlier. After several years spent in and around Perth the young couple took up land in the Elgin district in 1903.

I was mainly due to the efforts of the late Mrs. Reid that the Elgin school was built and opened in 1910. For many years, she conducted Sunday school for the children of the district.

The great esteem and affection felt for this kind and gentle woman was evidenced by the very large number of mourners who attended the funeral. After a service held at the Anglican Church at Stratham by Archdeacon Lerpiniere, of Bunbury, the remains were interred in the Anlican cemetery at Capel on Thursday afternoon last. Pall-bearers were Messrs. W. W. Hutton, E.R.C Roberts, R. Murnane, Erle Scott, V.G. Roberts and D.E. Scott.

Many beautiful floral tributes were placed on the grave. The late Mrs. Reid, who was aged 75, is survived by her husband, sons David, Jim, Mac, Doug, and brother Fred Tucker, of Capel River. Her only daughter Thelma pre-deceased her some years ago.
