Their Story

George was born eldest of 13 children of George Snr and Margaret Payne.

He went to Capel River School until the age of 8. From then he was sent to Guildford Grammar School, Perth, Western Australia until 16 years of age.

On leaving school he returned to the family farm on Goodwood Road, Capel, Western Australia working with his parents on a mixed orchard, then a dairy and beef farm.

He met Beryl Cain at 16 years of age at the Capel and Elgin dances and they married when they were 20 years of age.

Four girls arrived over the next 8 years. Sadly their eldest daughter Pauline was killed in a car crash in 1975.

George loved sport, playing football, cricket, golf, darts and lawn bowls.  He also enjoyed fishing, gong to Exmouth for many years and heading down to Sugarloaf with mates.

In 1996 George’s kidneys failed him, which resulted in several years of dialysis until his sister Janet donated one of her kidneys to him in 1995.

His deteriorating health meant he could no longer farm, so a house was purchased in the Capel townsite, and they moved in 2001.

Once living in town George became very interested in woodwork and lathed many nice pieces in his shed.

Being the oldest son in the family tree, descendants from Robert and Catherine Payne, George Oliver Payne V has been granted the Freeman of the City of London.  This has been passed down the line from Robert to the eldest son in succession George, George 11, George 111, George 1V and then to George V.  The scroll is being held in the Ron Maidment Archives Room at the Shire of Capel Library, Capel, Western Australia. As George only had daughters, the lineage ceased.

George succumbed to cancer and passed away in 2013.
