Their Story

Charles Harris born 1855 at Inlet Park, Busselton in Western Australia, was the first child and eldest son to Ebenezer Harris and Catherine Scanlon. His father Ebenezer arrived, along with his parents, Charles and Winifred and siblings in 1842 aboard the Diadem at Australind.

Grandparents arrival to Western Australia:

Charles and Winifred Harris arrived at the Australind Settlement, Western Australia aboard the ship Diadem on the 10 April 1842, along with their children David b-3 Feb 1831, Ebenezer b-1833, Maria b-1835, George b-1838 and Harriet b-1841.  They settled at Australind where Charles was employed as a farm labourer and the first Police officer of the Australind Area. They moved down the coast to Bunbury where their next child Hannah, was born in 1843, then to Wakenup where Amelia was born on 25 August 1844, and lastly to Busselton where Charles was born on 30 June 1846, at Cattle Chosen, the home of the Bussell family.   Charles and Winifred built a house at Quindalup where the family starting farming.

Charles his wife Winifred along with George and Amelia and possibly Charles Jnr left Western Australia and sailed to NSW and settled in Wagga Wagga in about 1866-1867.

Their son David and his wife Ellen Gallagher and children followed them shortly after, in 1868.

Charles appears to have continued farming after relocating to NSW, he possibly relocated due to land being made available by the government in this area, at this time. Also, a possible reason to move to NSW was Winifred had family of a deceased sister living in the area. (Surname Clout)

Winifred died on 31 August 1870; she was 59 years of age and died of disease of the Heart.  She is buried in the Wagga Wagga cemetery. Her religion was Wesleyan Methodist.

After Winifred’s Death in 1870, Charles married once again, to Sarah Oxley, on 21 February 1871, he was 60 years of age. Sarah was previously been married to Frederick Bartlett. In 1872 Charles Harris can be found living on Albury Road, Wagga Wagga.

Charles died on the 9 February 1886, at Brucedale, Wagga Wagga, NSW. He died from old age. His occupation was listed as a farmer, and he was 76 years old. He was buried in Wagga Wagga. Charles religion was Wesleyan Methodist.

Charles and Winifred’s daughter Maria stayed in Western Australia as she had married James Moore in 1852 at Australind. They continued to live in Bunbury.   James Moore’s family had also arrived on the ship Diadem in 1842. It can be summised, that the families remained close, as James Moore left money in his Will to both Ebenezer Harris, his brother-in-law and a son of Amelia Harris, his sister-in-law, in Wagga Wagga.

It can not be determined which daughter, Harriet or Hannah died in 1854 at the Australind settlement after eating a poisonous plant, and no further can be found as to which sister may have survived. Nothing more is known of the movements of their last son Charles, born in 1846 at Cattle Chosen, Busselton.

Parents Story:

Ebenezer Harris, born 1833, who arrived at age 9 to Western Australia, remained at Quindalup after his parents’ departure. He now had a wife, Catherine Scanlon, who he had married on 24 April 1855, at Inlet Park, Busselton, where he was working at the time.  Catherine was born in Ireland and had arrived in Western Australia aboard the ship “Clara” in 1853. They farmed at Quindalup and fished the local waters.  They raised their young family on the family farm, in the area between the beach and the inlet. Ebenezer Harris died at Busselton on the 8 September 1914, he is buried at the Busselton Pioneer Cemetery. He was 81 years of age and had been married to Catherine for 58 years. He was survived by all his eight children and his wife Catherine.  Catherine Harris died on the 3 January 1917, at Quindalup. She is buried at the Busselton Pioneer Cemetery.

Charles Story:

Charles Harris born 1855, the eldest son of Ebenezer and Catherine, spent the early years of his life growing up in the Quindalup/Dunsborough area with his parents and siblings. In early life, he would have known his grandparents and aunts and uncles who lived in the area until he was about 13 years of age when they departed for NSW.  Later he was employed at various timber mills, most likely this was an industry familiar to the family and employed many fit young men of the time.  He worked in areas including the Ballarat Mill just north of Busselton at Lockville, which was WA’s first railway line in 1871.

Charles married in 1878 at the age of 23 years, to Anna Ellen House who was 29 years at the time of marriage.  Anna was born on 14 August 1849 at Wonnerup, Western Australia.  She was the daughter of William House and Martha Higgins.

Anna Ellen House had a first marriage to John Charles Delaporte in 1869.  He was born 1843 and died 1876 and was the son of John Delaporte and Emma Penfold. They had four children together, William John Charles Delaporte born 1870, Alice Eliza Delaporte born 1872, Hannah Sarah Delaporte born 1874 and Henry Thomas Delaporte born 1876.

It must be noted that Anna Ellen House’s daughter, from her first marriage to John Delaporte, called Hannah Sarah Delaporte born 1874, married her mother’s second husband, Charles Harris’s younger brother, George Benjamin Harris, in 1896.

During the early years of their marriage 1879-1884 Charles and Anna lived in Yokanup where their first four children were born.  Yokanup is now called Yoganup or Happy Valley.  It was situated on the Ludlow River, next to the Ballarat Railway line which connected Yokanup to Wonnerup.  The town site was used as an outstation for the timber workers and the Mill. There was even a small school on site, though Charles and Anna’s children would have been too young at his stage to attend. It was an extremely dangerous industry, with many fatalities and severely injured men, mainly from falling trees during the logging process. At the timber mills, during 1880 two men were killed in separate accidents at the Yokanup Mill, this would have played on the minds of many young families in the area, worrying about the safety of their loved ones.

Charles and Anna left the Yokanup/Wonnerup area and purchased farming land in Capel, at Stirling Estate.

Trove Article 1921 – Drainage of Stirling Estate – link

Here they started farming, primarily dairy farming. They were well regarded by the local community. Their children married into many local families, including Frederick, Edward and Amelia, before the death of their mother Anna, in 1911.  The family also suffered through the loss of Bertha, their sister and daughter in 1909. She was only 25 years when she died and is buried in the Bunbury Pioneer Cemetery.

Anna’s children, from her first marriage to John Delaporte also married; William John Charles Delaporte married Lucy Hurst in 1898, Alice Eliza Delaporte married Daniel Sinclair in 1892, Hannah Sarah Delaporte married George Benjamin Harris in 1896 and Henry Thomas Delaporte married Emily Ada Harwood in 1899.

Anna Ellen Harris died on the 19 June 1911, she was 61years of age and is buried at the Capel Cemetery.

In 1925 Charles Harris sold his farm in Capel and moved back to Quindalup and lived with his brother Andrew, until his death on 15 July 1929.  Charles was 74 years old. He died at St John of God Hospital in Subiaco Perth.  He was buried at Capel Cemetery with his wife.
