Their Story
Enid’s father John Gibson was 16 years old when he came to WA from Ballarat. He spent his early years cutting jarrah sleepers. In 1907 he married Marian Payne daughter of one of Capel’s earliest settlers. In their early married life they lived in Donnybrook and Jarrahwood. They later moved to North west Rd. Capel. In 1916 John joined the AIF and served in France. On return he and Marian bought a farm on the Capel River. Here they extended the existing orchard. As land was cleared the established a small herd of cattle. (Mavis Gibson 1974)
Enid was one of eleven siblings, born to John and Marian Gibson. She was born in Busselton before the family moved to Capel River.
In a booked called “Bravehearts” written by Elizabeth Blackman, she outlines the history of the extended family tree from Marian and John.
Private Enid Gibson (WFX 38444) enlisted into the army in April 1942, she was discharged in 1947 and posted to 2/1 Australian General Hospital.
