Father: William John Charles Delaporte  born 1870 at Capel, Western Australia; the eldest of four children of John Charles Delaporte and Anna Ellen House. Married widow Lucy Payne in 1898 at Bunbury, Western Australia. Died in Hospital at Bunbury on 17 October 1941. Buried Capel Cemetery, Anglican D Section, Row 3, Grave #18/19.

Mother: Lucy Hurst (Payne), born 1863, Collie River, Western Australia. Married widower George Robert Payne (c.1840 – 1895) at Bunbury in 1886; he had a family of six sons and two daughters born between 1869 and 1883, with his first wife Elizabeth Hough (1848 – 1884), a cousin of Lucy. Lucy and George Payne had three daughters and two sons during their nine years of marriage. Lucy Delaporte died aged 76 years on 24 October 1939 at Bunbury. She is buried with William John Charles, her husband of more than thirty years, at the Capel Cemetery in the grave marked as “Mum and Dad”, situated in Anglican D Section, Row 3, Grave #18/19.

Grandparents (father):

John Charles Delaporte, born 18 April 1843, Australind, Western Australia. The first born of labourer John and Emma (Penfold) Delaporte’s six children after their arrival on the ‘Trusty’ as immigrants to the Australind settlement in December 1842. John Charles Delaporte also died when a young father/man in about 1876, though there appears to be no WABDM registration record of his death, nor is his burial location known.

Anna Ellen House (also known as Hannah, and Ellen {as per her headstone}) was born 14 August 1849, at Wonnerup, in Western Australia, the daughter of William House (c.1809 – 1875) and Martha Higgins (1825 – 1902). She died on 19 June 1911 at Capel and is buried in the Anglican section of the Capel Cemetery with her husband Charles Harris.

Grandparents (mother):

Basil Hurst born 1828, Leicestershire, England. Died 2 May 1901 at his home near the Collie Bridge, Greenwood (near Australind), Western Australia. Buried Bunbury Pioneer Cemetery. Basil had also arrived as part of the Australind settlement scheme with his parents Abraham and Ann (Howlett) Hurst and siblings per the ‘Diadem’ in April 1842. He was a sawyer in the timber industry and then a farmer on the Collie River, just beyond the Collie River bridge.

Married 5 July 1853

Maria Gardiner,  born 1831, Gloucestershire, England. She died suddenly three days after her Stillborn Granddaughter on 17 October 1903 at her residence, Greenwood (near Australind). Buried Bunbury Pioneer Cemetery. Maria, her parents Reuben and Ann (Brown) Gardiner (aka Gardner), two brothers and three sisters were also settlers at Australind, arriving in December 1842 on the ‘Trusty’.

Marian Edith Payne, born 1887, Capel, Western Australia. Died 19 September 1955, Capel, Western Australia. Buried Capel Cemetery, Anglican B Section, Row 6, Grave #70. Married John Finlayson Gibson, born 1886, the son of Andrew William Gibson and Ann Campbell.

Ruth Evelyn Payne, born 1889, Capel, Western Australia. Died 25 February 1954, Donnybrook, Western Australia. Buried Donnybrook Cemetery. Married John Cross, born 1885, the son of John Cross Snr and Grace Kelly Pearce.

Justus Allan Payne, born 1891, Capel, Western Australia. Died 5 October 1960, Queensland. Buried Nundah Cemetery, Nundah Brisbane City, Queensland. Married Beatrice Maud Capewell (1891 –1983), the daughter of Frederick Pritchard Capewell and Mary Ann Jackson in 1913; she remarried William Alfred Doust (1884 – 1966) in 1957. Justus (Allan) Payne remarried in Queensland.

Cyril Thomas Payne, born 1893, Capel, Western Australia. Died 2 November 1916, Flers, Somme, Picardie, France. WW1. Private C.T. Payne is buried near Bapaume in the Warlencourt British Cemetery France (Plot 3 Row E Grave

Frederick Delaporte, born 7 April 1899, Coolingup (Capel), Western Australia. Died 1 March 1978, Capel, Western Australia. Buried Capel Cemetery, Anglican A section, Row 9, Grave #77. Married Doris Constance Jarvis, born 1908, daughter of Edward Thomas Jarvis and Blanche Capel Scott.

Stanley Vernon Delaporte, born 1901, Capel, Western Australia. Died 3 January 1966, Kirup, Western Australia. Buried Capel Cemetery, Anglican A section, Row 4, Grave #33. Married Annie Grace Landwehr, born 1910, daughter of Charles Henry Landwehr and Beatrice Wealands

Doris Martha Delaporte, born 1905, Capel, Western Australia. Died 9 April 1990, Busselton, Western Australia. Buried Capel Cemetery, Anglican A section, Row 10, Grave #83.  Married Maxwell Gordon Bentley, born 1899, son of James Levi Bentley and Emily Scrivener.


Their Story

William John Charles and Lucy Delaporte’s Stillborn Baby Girl was their third child and first daughter. In 1905, aged (about) forty two years, Lucy gave birth to their last child, daughter Doris Martha Delaporte.

The Death Certificate of Baby Girl Delaporte details that William and Lucy resided in the Capel River area, with William being a farmer and contractor. Charles Frederick Scott was the undertaker who certified the burial of Stillborn Baby Delaporte. George Edward Dilley (a local farmer and storekeeper) and John James Hutton (the Capel Inn hotelkeeper) were the witnesses of her burial.
