Their Story
Henry was the eldest of Sarah Hutton children. Henry was, we are told, when very young was placed in care with an Italian couple. When war broke out, he was returned to his Grandparents Thomas Giles and Eliza Hutton, as the couple who had been caring for him were interned in a camp during the War.
We believe Henry spent some time with his mother and step father Joseph Davis and much of his early life and youth with his Hutton grandparent’s family in Capel. A family photo shows Henry present with his mother at the baptism of his half-sister Hannah Ethel Davis in 1911 and another photo of Henry with his Hutton Grandparents and Aunt Amy Hutton visiting Sarah and Joseph Davis for Christmas 1922. Henry features in many Hutton family photos such as the one below with Joseph Davis’s son Joseph Stanley Davis and Aunt Amy Hutton.
William Henry Davis married Emily Eliza Farmer on the 14 Apr 1931 at Marradong Church.
After their marriage they lived in the Capel area. They then leased a property in Donnybrook before purchasing a block of land between Donnybrook and Capel which according to Emily, later was the site of the Goodwood Road Primary School.
It was reported in the South Western Advertiser that “Mr and Mrs Davis and 9 children had arrived from Donnybrook to Pinjarra area to manager Mr Maughan’s farm.
