Their Story

Very little is known about Gustaf Adolf Anderson. He was born in Sweden and arrived in Sydney, New South Wales from London in May 1878, living there until 1892 when he moved to Western Australia. It isn’t clear when he came to the small farming town of Capel but here he owned and presumably lived on Stirling Suburban Lots 20, 42 and 43. These are around what is now known as Hall Road, Capel. He gained citizenship of Australia in 1911 and his address was given as Capel. Gustaf Anderson first appears on the Capel Electoral Roll in 1912. His address is given as the above location, and he is listed as a labourer. He is then listed in the 1916, 1922, 1925, 1931, 1936 and 1937, still at the same address and occupation.

Application for Naturalization

In August 1911 Gustaf applied to the Capel Roads Board to have the road between his lots 20 and 42 closed but was advised that the application would have to be advertised first.

Trove Article – Dept. of Lands Not in Favour.

This advertisement appeared in The Bunbury Herald 1st  June 1916, presumably the closure of the road was not successful.

I intend to apply at the next meeting of the Capel Road Board for Permission to Erect a Swing-gate across the Road between Lots 20 and 42, Stirling Suburban Area.

A Plain and Fancy-Dress Fundraiser was held in 1918, in Capel, to aid the Parkerville Waifs Home.

Trove Article – Donation to Fundraiser.

Gustaf led a quiet life, as there is very little mention of him in the newspapers of the time. When he died on July 16, 1942, it appears that he might not have had a will. Maybe he thought it unnecessary as he didn’t have any descendants. The following advertisements appeared in 1943.
